- The BIOS must be properly configured
- USB MUST be Enabled in the BIOS (USB keyboard
is Enabled and/or Legacy USB is installed)
- BIOS Chip Performance Speed -
Normal
or Enhanced Chip
Performance - Enabled
- USB does NOT like to share its IRQ with
another device.
- AMD Systems NEED Approved Supplies
- NO exclamations marks should appear next to
USB in Windows Device Manager

System Specific
Win95 v.B & C Only (Copied
from the
VIA Q & A recently pulled from the VIA web site)
- Q: Are there any USB drivers for Windows 95?
A: We do not have any drivers for Win 95 because of it's limited USB
support. For the best USB performance, we suggest upgrading to Windows 98
or later. If you want to continue using Win 95, we suggest using the
default drivers. You must have Win 95 OSR2 version or later.
Win98 First Edition
- VIA IRQ Routing Driver
for
Windows
98 First Edition Only. Try
this before installing the Service Pack
- On older VIA chipset based motherboards,
(Socket 7), running Win98 First Edition, (also known as Windows
Gold Edition), you may see better results if you DO NOT update
Internet Explorer or install the Win98 Service Pack. If you have completed
the other steps in this guide and USB is still not working properly install the Win98
Service Pack.

2000 Drivers
Quote from the VIA Web Site: "Microsoft® has incorporated VIA drivers into
the Windows® 2000. Some users may be experiencing limited USB support with
Windows® 2000. This problem will be corrected with a USB filter driver which
enables Windows® 2000 to detect USB peripherals with VIA chipsets. The USB
Filter driver is under development and will be posted on our website upon
completion. VIA apologizes for any inconvenience."

Filter Driver Confusion.
What to Do - Installing the USB Filter Driver - Yes
or No
- Try to get your system working without
installing the USB Filter.
- Adjust the BIOS settings (Your
best chance)
- Follow all of the troubleshooting steps
- Install OS and/or Chipset specific
patches if applicable.
- If USB is still not working, install the USB Filter Driver
- The exception to this rule is the KT266
based motherboard. Install the New
74 Patch.zip for all KT266 Mainboards. This
above New 74 Patch is for KT266 based motherboards ONLY.
Note:
- The USB Filter Driver is NOT included
in the 4 in 1 Driver File.
- You MUST install the 4 in 1 Drivers
before the USB Filter Driver. (All Windows Operating Systems
EXCEPT WinXP)
VIA PCI Latency Patch
- VIA Chipsets have a known issue with PCI
Latency. Although, specifically developed for IDE and sound problems
with VIA chipsets, users have reported improved performance in other areas
including USB and video capture. If USB is otherwise working correctly
but, not a fast as you would expect, try the patch from VIA Hardware

USB works sporadically, hangs or
locks the system
-
Timing Issues with VIA
Chipset based motherboards can sometimes be fixed by setting the chip
performance speed in the BIOS to Normal instead of
Strong, Turbo, Optimal or Fast.
The setting title and location varies by manufacturer and board type.
-
Make sure that your Power
Supply is AMD certified
-
Check to see if USB is
sharing its IRQ with another device
-
USB does NOT like to
share its IRQ. If USB is sharing its IRQ with another device
you will need to isolate USB so that it has its own IRQ
-
Please
Note: Windows will NOT report USB IRQ sharing
violations even if one exists. To determine if USB is sharing
its IRQ use, System Information / Conflicts and Sharing
-
Update to the latest BIOS
version for your motherboard
-
Check the following BIOS
settings for True
-
PCI to DRAM Prefetch => Disabled
-
System Performance => Normal
-
PCI Master Read Caching
=> Disabled
-
Delayed Transaction => Disabled
-
PCI Master Time-Out => 0
-
K7 CLK_CTL => Default
-
P2C/C2P Concurrency => Disabled

Additional Help
- Web Cams / WinXP
/ KT133 boards
-
Solution
- Install a PCI/USB card. Disable onboard USB function in the
BIOS
-
Tip - Choose a card
from the tested and
approved page. There is a thread on the VIA
Arena Forum that makes interesting reading. So far this is
the only known fix. VIA, brand new chipset, same old problem.

Last Resort
So you've done all the above and
still no USB. Check in the Special Section for specific fixes.
If still no good, a tested and approved USB/PCI card will usually do the
trick. Follow the link and read all the information before you
buy a card.
- Install a OPTi or Lucent chipset based PCI/USB Card in an available PCI slot
if you need additional USB 1.1 ports. If you wish to upgrade to USB
2.0, buy a card with an NEC chipset. Keep in mind that USB 2.0 cards
require (2) additional IRQs and work best when installed in a PCI slot that
does NOT share an IRQ with any other
device. Choose from the list of USBMan
Tested and Approved Upgrade
Cards by Manufacturer and Chipset. DO NOT buy a VIA based PCI/USB card
testing has proved them to be unreliable on systems with existing USB
problems
